• Digital X-rays are often required to identify the source of the pain.
• Based on the diagnosis, treatment options may include root canal therapy, extraction, new fillings, crowns, or periodontal care.
• Where needed, medications can be prescribed to manage infection or pain before final treatment is provided.

Accidents and dental trauma

• Sporting injuries or accidents can cause teeth to chip, fracture, or be completely knocked out (avulsion).
• If there are severe head or facial injuries, patients are referred to the emergency department first for medical assessment.
• If a tooth is knocked out and stored in milk or saliva, replantation may be possible if seen promptly.
• Larger fractured pieces of a tooth can sometimes be re-attached if preserved.

Pain or bleeding after dental surgery

• It’s normal to experience some bleeding after an extraction, but if it continues for several hours, firm pressure with gauze for 15–20 minutes is advised.
• Persistent bleeding may require stitches if not already placed. Patients should also avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours.

Pain or Bleeding After Extraction

• Stick to soft foods and avoid hot, cold, or hard items.
• Keep your head slightly elevated.
• Bite firmly on fresh gauze for around 30 minutes to help control bleeding

Facial Swelling

• Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the swollen area.
• Never use heat, as it can worsen the swelling.
• Take painkillers as directed.
• If swelling spreads near the eye, jaw, or neck, seek urgent care at the emergency department immediately.
