Dental Crown Cost in Sydney

What Influences the Price and What to Expect

By now, you understand what a dental crown is, the different materials available, and what happens during the procedure.

The next question most patients ask is straightforward:
How much will it cost, and why does the price vary?

There isn’t a single fixed price for a dental crown. The cost depends on the material selected, the position of the tooth, the technology involved, and the condition of the tooth underneath.

For many Sydney families, the concern isn’t just the number itself. It’s whether there will be unexpected fees later.

In this guide, we explain what influences the cost of a dental crown and how we provide clear, written treatment plans before any work begins.

If you would like a personalised estimate, you can book a consultation at any of our 18 Sydney locations.

What Is the Average Cost of a Dental Crown in Sydney?

In Australia, the cost of a single dental crown typically ranges between $1,400 and $2,100.

This range depends on:

  • The material chosen
  • Whether the crown is made in-house or by an external laboratory
  • The complexity of the tooth
  • Any additional treatment required beforehand

These figures reflect standard clinical cases. A precise quote can only be provided after a clinical examination and appropriate imaging.

“When patients ask why there’s a range in pricing, I explain that a crown isn’t just a simple cap,” Dr May Aung from No Gaps Dental Castle Hill Clinic explains, “It’s a custom-made restoration. The material, the preparation and the design all influence the final cost.”

Cost Differences by Crown Type

While your dentist will recommend the most suitable option for your tooth, different crown types can sit at different points within the pricing range.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is known for strength and durability, particularly for back teeth where biting forces are higher. Due to material and fabrication factors, these may sit toward the higher end of the range.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

A traditional option with a metal base and porcelain outer layer. Often positioned mid-range in pricing.

CEREC Same-Day Ceramic Crowns

Produced in-clinic using CAD/CAM technology. Because they are made on-site, laboratory and courier fees are avoided, which can make pricing comparable to traditional crowns.

Dr May notes:

“For some patients, same-day crowns offer convenience. For others, a laboratory-made crown may be more suitable. The recommendation depends on the clinical situation, not just the cost.”

5 Factors That Influence Your Final Quote

When you receive a treatment plan, the fee reflects more than just the crown itself.

  1. Clinical Preparation
Your dentist carefully reshapes the tooth to ensure a precise fit. This requires time and attention to detail.
  2. Material Selection
Different ceramics and zirconia materials vary in strength, translucency and manufacturing cost.
  3. Laboratory Involvement
If the crown is handcrafted by a dental technician, the laboratory fee is included in the total.
  4. Diagnostic Imaging
Digital X-rays or 3D scans may be required to assess the health of the tooth and surrounding structures.
  5. Tooth Position and Complexity
Front teeth often require additional shade matching for a natural appearance. Back teeth must withstand stronger bite pressure.

How Much Will My Health Fund Cover?

Most private health funds in Australia cover crowns under Major Dental.

Depending on your level of cover, rebates commonly range between $400 to $800 or more per crown. The exact amount depends on:

  • Your health fund
  • Your level of cover
  • Waiting periods
  • Annual limits

At No Gaps Dental, we use HICAPS for on-the-spot electronic claiming. This means you only pay the remaining gap after your rebate is processed.

Before treatment begins, we provide:

  • The relevant item number (for example, Item 613 for a full crown)
  • The full treatment fee
  • An estimate of your rebate
  • Your expected out-of-pocket cost

This allows you to confirm your coverage with your fund before proceeding. If you are unsure about your entitlement, our team can help you check.

Why Patients Often Worry About Crown Costs

From speaking with patients across Sydney, we know that uncertainty about pricing can cause hesitation.

Common concerns include:

  • Will the cost increase on the day?
  • Does my health fund really cover this?
  • Are there additional fees not listed?

That’s why we prioritise:

  • Written treatment plans
  • Clear fee breakdowns
  • Confirmation before treatment
  • No additional procedures without discussion

Dr May says:

“Clear explanations make a big difference. When patients understand exactly what’s included in their quote, they feel more confident about their decision.”

Are Dental Crowns Worth the Cost?

A crown is usually recommended when a tooth has been significantly weakened by decay, fracture, or root canal treatment.

In these cases, reinforcing the remaining tooth structure may restore chewing function, protect the tooth from further fracture, and help preserve the tooth for longer.

Your dentist will only recommend a crown if the tooth cannot be reliably restored with a filling alone.

Does Medicare Cover Dental Crowns?

For most adults, Medicare does not cover restorative dental treatments such as crowns.

Some children may be eligible for limited dental benefits under government programs, depending on criteria.

If you do not have private health insurance, we can provide a written treatment plan and discuss staged treatment options where appropriate.
