Types of Dental Emergencies We Treat in Our Blacktown Clinic

Some of the most common emergencies we see at our Blacktown clinic include:

  • Facial or gum swelling is usually linked to infection in a tooth or surrounding tissues. Symptoms may include tenderness, fever, or difficulty opening the mouth. We use digital X-rays and an oral examination to confirm the cause.   Antibiotics may be provided for temporary control, but dental treatment is essential. Timely care helps prevent infection from spreading to more serious areas of the face or jaw.

  • Cracks may cause pain when chewing or sensitivity to hot and cold. They often result from biting hard foods, trauma, or weakened restorations. Small cracks may be managed with bonding or fillings, while larger ones often require crowns. If the crack reaches the nerve, root canal therapy may be recommended.   Leaving a cracked tooth untreated can result in worsening pain or infection.

  • This is one of the most urgent dental emergencies. A knocked-out tooth should be kept moist in milk or saliva and brought to us immediately. The sooner the tooth is replanted, the higher the chance of saving it.   We will assess the socket, clean the area, and stabilise the tooth with a splint if replantation is possible. Quick action is critical to the outcome.

  • A missing filling or loose crown can leave the tooth exposed, causing sensitivity and discomfort. We can often repair or replace the restoration quickly. A crown that is intact may sometimes be re-cemented, but fractured crowns generally need replacement. Temporary materials may be used to protect the tooth until definitive treatment is provided.   At No Gaps Dental Blacktown, urgent appointments are prioritised so patients receive the help they need without delay.

  • Some bleeding is normal after an extraction, but if it continues for several hours it requires urgent attention. Biting firmly on gauze for 20 minutes may help stop the bleeding. If this fails, stitches may be required. Patients should also avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours.   Our dentists will review the site and ensure proper healing.

What to do if you have a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies can be stressful, but there are steps you can take before you reach us:

Cracked or fractured tooth

Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent the crack from worsening. Rinse gently with warm water to keep the area clean. Take over-the-counter pain medication if needed. If you notice swelling, apply a cold compress on the cheek. Seek urgent care, as untreated cracks may progress into infection.

Knocked-out permanent tooth

Handle the tooth carefully, avoiding the root. Rinse it very gently in milk or saline if dirty, but do not scrub. Try to place it back in the socket if possible, otherwise store it in milk or saliva. Attend the dentist immediately, as time is critical for successful replantation.

Persistent bleeding after extraction

Bite firmly on clean gauze for at least 20 minutes to help form a clot. Avoid rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge the clot. Keep your head elevated and rest. Stick to soft foods and avoid hot drinks. If bleeding continues, contact your dentist promptly for further care.

Lost filling or crown

Avoid sticky or chewy foods that could further damage the tooth. Keep the area clean by rinsing after meals. If the crown is intact, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment. Some pharmacies sell temporary cement which may provide short-term relief. Arrange to see your dentist quickly, as unprotected teeth are vulnerable to decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you act quickly, a knocked-out tooth can sometimes be saved. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and if possible place it back into the socket gently. If that is not possible, store it in milk or saliva and bring it to us immediately.   The faster you arrive, ideally within the hour, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

  • In most cases you can, but it depends on the procedure and whether sedation or strong pain medication is used. For simple extractions, many patients are fine to drive themselves home. However, if sedation or surgical treatment is involved, you will need someone to accompany you.   Your dentist will always give you clear instructions based on your specific situation.

  • Not always. Some minor cracks can be treated with bonding or fillings if they have not reached the nerve. Larger cracks, especially those that weaken the structure of the tooth, often require a crown to restore strength and prevent further breakage.   During your appointment, we will assess the crack and advise the most appropriate solution for your tooth.

  • Swelling usually begins to reduce within 48 to 72 hours after treatment, but this varies depending on the severity of the infection or injury. Applying a cold compress and following aftercare advice can help speed recovery.   If swelling worsens or does not improve after a few days, you should contact your dentist for a review. Our team will ensure you are supported until your symptoms fully resolve.

  • Swelling in the face or gums usually indicates infection and should be taken seriously. While mild swelling may seem manageable, infections can spread quickly to other parts of the face and neck.   It is important to see a dentist as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you also have fever or difficulty breathing, you should seek emergency medical care without delay.
