There are good reasons why you should visit a dentist at least twice a year to get your teeth professionally cleaned. For starters, only a dentist or dental hygienist is able to remove hardened plaque and tartar that is otherwise impossible to do with regular brushing and flossing.
This professional cleaning technique is popularly known as”Scale & Clean” or”Scale & Polish”.”Scaling and Root Planing” is a similar but more advanced cleaning technique typically recommended for patients during the early stages of gum disease.
Even if you are a person who looks after your teeth very well with regular brushing and flossing, there is really no substitute for Dental Scaling and Cleaning – which can only be performed at a dentist’s office.
Professional dental cleaning administered by a dentist or dental hygienist is not only more thorough, it can remove plaque from difficult to access areas in between teeth and below the gum line.
If you do not wish to let plaque and tartar have a chance to accumulate on your teeth and lead to dental problems down the road, do not neglect visiting your dentist every six months to get your teeth properly cleaned and polished.

What does Dental Scaling and Cleaning involve?
The dentist usually begins by removing any plaque deposits stuck on or in between the teeth. This may be accomplished with an ultrasonic scaler that helps to loosen and dislodge the sticky substance. This is combined with a therapeutic wash and flush that helps to remove the plaque and food debris hiding in the pockets between your teeth using a micro spray of cool water.
The”scaling” portion of the procedure involves the use of a small instrument known as a”Scaler” to scrape away the plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. The ultrasonic cleaner may also be used at this juncture to clean below the gum line as well. Upon removing the plaque, the dentist will proceed to polish your teeth with a special type of toothpaste that may feel a little gritty but it helps to remove any bacteria still lingering on your teeth. Of course, a good polish will also make your teeth look and feel clean.
Finally, you may opt for a fluoride treatment, which essentially involves the dentist applying a cool fluoride-infused gel on the surface of your teeth to protect them against acid and bacteria.
What you can expect from a Dental Scale & Clean is a painless process that effectively leaves a fresh and clean sensation in your mouth.
What is Root Planing?
Recommended for patients with gum disease, a special procedure known as Root Planing may be administered after Dental Scaling for a deeper clean. The “planing” portion of the procedure involves cleaning and smoothening the post-scaling roughness below the gum level. Scaling and root planing is treated under local anaesthesia.
